How We Digitized a Surfboard Manufacturing Workflow
An inside look at how we replaced manual coordination with one connected system for a custom surfboard manufacturer — from order to finished product.
Building a custom surfboard is a manufacturing process disguised as a craft. Every order carries its own specifications, materials and production sequence, and all of that has to stay connected to a customer record and, eventually, an invoice. When we started working with a surfboard factory, none of that was connected — it was coordinated by memory, spreadsheets and word of mouth.
The problem: coordination by memory
The factory could build excellent boards, but it had no reliable way to answer a simple question: where is this order right now? Production stages, materials and customer details lived in disconnected tools, which meant tracking a single board through the workshop required asking around rather than checking a system. That created delays and occasional errors that had nothing to do with the quality of the craftsmanship.
Mapping the real workflow before building anything
Before writing any code, we mapped how a board actually moves from order to delivery — every stage, every handoff, every piece of information someone needed at each step. That mapping is what shaped the system, rather than starting from a generic "manufacturing software" template and forcing the factory’s process to fit it.
What we built
The result was a single system covering production management, order tracking, customer management, workflow tracking, invoicing and an operational dashboard. An order entering the system now carries its specification and materials through each production stage automatically, so staff can see exactly where any board is without asking anyone.
The result
One connected workflow replaced scattered information and manual processes. The team spends less time coordinating and more time building, and management has visibility into production that simply didn’t exist before.
